The Pavilion Montessori School

 

Montessori is a holistic approach to early education which takes its name from Dr Maria Montessori.  Fundamental to the approach is the belief that a child's early years from birth to six are the period when they have the greatest capacity to learn.

 

 

MARIA MONTESSORI (1870 - 1952)

 

The first woman doctor in Italy, Maria Montessori started her work with deprived and special needs children but by 1901 was running her ‘Casa dei Bambini’ for all children.  She approached their education as a scientist, using the classroom as her laboratory for observing children and finding ways to help them to achieve their full potential.  She developed her own teaching materials and in her carefully prepared environment devised a broad based method of education, which encouraged each child’s learning in a way appropriate to their development. The children flourished.  Maria Montessori understood children’s natural joy in the discovery and acquisition of skills.  She saw that children learn best by doing and that happy self-motivated learners form positive images of themselves as confident, successful people.  She created specially designed resources to foster independence and a love for learning from an early age.

 

Maria Montessori was a true pioneer of child-centred education and her innovative classroom practices and ideas have had a profound influence on the education of young children all over the world.
